Brand origins

It was the year 1966 when Bottega Veneta was founded in Italy, in the Veneto region, by Renzo Zengiaro and Michele Taddei, who, along with Michele's wife Laura Taddei, decided to establish the brand. The name could be translated as "Venetian workshop," although its literal meaning is "bottega" (workshop) and "Veneta" would be a nod to the Veneto region, the exact region where it all began.

The vision of these two entrepreneurs was not just to create a new fashion brand but rather to establish a legacy based on authentic Italian craftsmanship. Their focus was on attention to detail, the use of the highest quality materials, and the incorporation of traditional techniques that highlighted the value and beauty of craftsmanship, including the distinctive "intrecciato" technique, a woven pattern that is still used today and is the brand's hallmark.

By the late 1970s, the original founders decided to leave the brand. This, combined with the divorce between Michele and Laura, led her to acquire full ownership of her ex-husband's share, taking the helm of the brand along with her new partner, Vittorio Moltedo.

During the 1970s and 1980s, Bottega Veneta experienced rapid growth, becoming one of the most recognized and coveted luxury brands in the world. Its products were admired for their quality and design, attracting celebrities and high society. This era was characterized by the trend adopted by many brands to plaster their logos everywhere; in contrast, Bottega Veneta took a different approach.

"When your initials are enough."

This was the famous slogan that the brand would profess, distancing itself from the trends of the moment and adopting a stance of discretion and minimalism to set itself apart from other fashion houses.

Challenges of the 1990s

During this decade, Bottega Veneta faced a series of challenges that led to a crisis. Several factors converged during this period, resulting in a decline in the brand's popularity and profitability.

The departure from the brand's identity marked a turning point during this era, as Bottega Veneta began to distance itself from its essence and the core values that had made it so special. The brand, known for its discretion and emphasis on craftsmanship and quality, started producing designs with more prominent and ostentatious logos in an attempt to follow the trends of the moment, as brands like Dior and Gucci began incorporating logos into their pieces. The Italian brand tried to do the same, causing its loyal clientele, who had consumed its products for their minimalistic and understated nature, to migrate to other brands.

Winds of change from 2001

Creative Direction by Tomas Maier 2001 - 2018

In this year, the Gucci Group, now known as Kering, acquired Bottega Veneta. This marked a crucial turning point for the brand. Under the guidance of this group, there was a complete reassessment and a conscious effort to bring Bottega Veneta back to its roots.

One of the most transformative decisions was the appointment of German designer Tomas Maier as creative director in 2001. With his deep respect for craftsmanship and a focus on quality over quantity, he was intentional about restoring the brand to its former glory by removing visible logos, returning to the use of the intrecciato weave, and emphasizing craftsmanship over ostentation.

While Maier remained true to the brand's roots, in February 2005, Bottega Veneta reached a milestone with its first women's ready-to-wear fashion show. Then, in June 2006, they made their debut in men's fashion. These innovative steps significantly expanded the brand's product range. Today, Bottega Veneta's offerings have expanded to include items such as jewelry, eyewear, fragrances, and even home decor and furniture. However, its iconic pieces, which initially propelled its renown, such as handbags, footwear, luggage, and other leather accessories, remain its most coveted items.

Creative Direction by Daniel Lee, 2019 - 2021

Daniel Lee, previously in charge of ready-to-wear design at Céline, was chosen to continue Maier's legacy. Lee reinterpreted the intrecciato, presenting it in larger sizes and unexpected shapes, creating pieces that quickly became the most coveted in the luxury market. Under Lee's direction, shoes and handbags became some of the most sought-after in the fashion industry, such as the padded mules and The Pouch bags, which went viral and consistently sold out.

Daniel Lee and his creative direction brought visibility to the brand, as celebrities like Hailey Bieber and Kylie Jenner became consumers of the brand, allowing more women around the world to aspire to purchase and wear these pieces.

Creative Direction by Matthieu Blazy, 2021 to the present

Until his appointment as creative director, Blazy served as the head of the brand's ready-to-wear division and has continued with the work initiated by his predecessor.

Who wears Bottega Veneta?

Personalities of the caliber of Queen Rania of Jordan, Rihanna, Kendall Jenner, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley have been seen carrying the famous models Jodie, Cassette, and The Pouch, a testament to the luxury status maintained by the brand.

But, what are the bags and accessories of the brand like?

  • Minimalist: After adding logos and flashy details and seeing that this did not work, the brand returned to its origins from which it never strayed. The characteristic weaving, defined geometry, minimalism, and delicacy with classic and highly combinable colors. This minimalism is also reflected in the other pieces that make up the Bottega Veneta universe.
  • Luxurious: This is reflected in both their craftsmanship and their design materials, using high-quality leather for their bags, shoes, wallets, and clothing, as well as exclusive materials for their jewelry, glasses, clothing, and accessories.

For these reasons, celebrities covet this brand because it has the best of both worlds, it grabs attention with its designs but remains traditional in terms of quality and craftsmanship.
